Why is my black skirt tetra so bloated? What could cause this? It's so bad that its scales are sticking out. How do I cure it or is it just a lost cause?

Dropsy is the effect of disease it is not the disease. It could be viral or bacterial. I would isolate the fish. It certainly could be contagious. I would QT the fish. Try feeding some mashed up pea incase it is just bloated. In QT you could add epsom salts to help with the bloating. If it does not clear up then try antibiotics. If it is viral not much you can do.

Symptoms usually include pop-eye, protrusion of scales and distended abdomen. There is a slim chance of recovery once the scales really protrude.:(

I wonder what it was with my tetra then? Mine looked just like that for 2 days or so, then slimmed back up a bit but is still cruising around fat and apparently happy. One of the other ones is fat as well, and the rest skinny. None of my other fish appear to be bloated in any way, just those two tetra.

Bleh.
