At our house, we refer to that as a "CLR," or common language reference. It's the kind of concept that has infiltrated our society and led to MovieSpeak and GuySpeak.
Fer instance, if we were watching two people discover something nasty about each other, I might say "Luke, I am you father!" You would know exactly what I meant, without having to get into the details of what I am talking about.
It's sad, and it only works if the other people around you have read/seen/experienced the same material, but when it works... it's AWESOME! I have a whole group of HeinlienSpeakers and ScifiSpeakers I deal with, and we almost always start off conversations with a reference to something we've all read.
