Hi, I have a gold fish that seems to have blisters on it's face, the same fish used to be gold and turned white (but that was about a year ago), does anyone know what this is and how to treat it?

Thanks

Could be a lot of things. Need to know some stuff before we can answer:

What sized tank is it in?
What are the nitrite, nitrate, ammonia and pH readings?
What is your water change schedule -- how much and how often?

Blisters on goldfish can be anything from ammonia burns, to swim bladder problems, to "diver's bends" (sudden influx of water containing too many nitrogen bubbles).

thanks for the reply.
It's a 2ftx1ft tank, i don't any of the reading (they have always been ok in the past) but i have a PH tester so i could test that later on. i normaly just change a few inches of water every week or two but i have been away so i haven't done that for a while, do think it could be bad water?

If you are only changing "a few inches" every week, most likely very bad water.

Really don't care about pH at this point, but it's very important that we find out what your nitrites, nitrates and ammonia readings are.

Until you can get it tested, you need to start doing 50% water changes -- half the tank water -- every day until you can get a test kit and find out what the water is really like.

I'm assuming that your measurements are for a 20g tank, so you need to change out at least 8g each time you change the water. The water changes need to be kept up in that quanitity and on a weekly basis as well. Goldfish are heavy waste producers, they need their water changed in large quantities and a lot.

With a goldfish in a tank that small, you really can't slack off on the water changes at all. If constant water changes are difficult for you, it would be better for the fish in the long run if you could move him to a 30g tank and either a filter rated for 60g, or two 30g filters.

Thanks for your help, I'm changing the water now, i'll see how it looks after i get the water back up to scratch, should i add new plants or is it best to wait until it's cleared up before doing that?

Thanks again
