I just recently noticed that one of my discus is very bloated...she's not eating and her stomach is really bloated. She is swimming fine and her color is good, but her belly is just really distened. Any Ideas?...she also isnt eating like her normal self. HELP

I feed a mix of tetramin pellets, frozen brine(spirlina enriched), frozen cichlid mix, frozen beef heart, and a veg mix. She is really bloated and she seems sluggish

It must have been more serious...she's now dead....she was fine just a few hours ago...I dont know what happened.....guess thats one of the worst parts of fish keeping....losing the fish you get attached too :(

Sorry for your loss....

I would lean more towards constipation...

In the future you should keep epsom salt on hand. Works really good for constipation in Discus.......

By chance would that Discus be a Blue diamond??

:girl:

which discus...the one that died or the one in my avatar?....actually the one that died was a flechen (spelling)...i just found it funny that she was now showing it one second then almost immediately she was really bloated the next then died about two hours later...just really weird to me

she might be cinstipated then, or this might be the early signs of dropsy.

I'm a relatively experienced aquarist but new to discus. I had my tank running with fish for about 5 weeks when one of my discus (3 inch) came down with the same symptoms you describe, although it was swimming at a downward angle as well as being bloated.

I had read about the constipation issue online and tried the treatment.

I used 3 liters of water and put 70 grams of Epsom Salt (210 grams total) per liter into it. I put the discus in the bath for about 3 minutes. It was floating on its side by then and I thought I had killed it. I moved it back to the main tank and it didn't look like it was going to make it. I checked back about two hours later and the fish was doing fine and has been ever since.

At the time, I was feeding bloodworms and color enhancing pellets. I theorized that the pellet food caused the constipation. I stopped feeding the pellets and haven't had a problem since.

from simply discus:How often to feed Discus
Ardan Huck

Generally it is best to feed discus three to five times per day for best growth and health. Some people use automatic feeders for feedings of dry food during the day.

A variety of foods is best. Live foods, dry flakes, pellets (make sure to presoak them before feeding, so they don't swell up inside the discus' stomach and cause a possible blockage), and frozen foods are often used. If fish seem to become dependent on only one type of food, do not feed them for a day or so. They will become very hunger and are more likely to eat other foods again.

Younger fish need frequent small feedings as their stomachs cannot hold as much food and they need more food to support their fast growth rate. However, water quality must be maintained and all uneaten food removed so as not to pollute the water.

just an FYI. altho it sounds like you varied the diet well.
