i got itchy today after work and i popped by the aquarium shop. got a pack of live bloodworms thinking my tiger barbs would like them for dinner.

i got a whole handfull pocket change and i came back and washed it and all..

it seems, my fish are not that game on bloodworms and they didnt finish the portion that was fed to them. soon, my powerhead sucked all the live worms into my overhead filter box. now i can imagine that there are live bloodworms swimming around amongst the ceramic rings and sponge in my filter...

is this going to pose a problem?

thanks guys...!

doesn't matter whether they're blood worms or tubifex worms. they're going to die in your filter and pollute your tank. you'e got some 'clean-up' work to do in that filter.

never just toss in a handfull of worms .. a few at a time and make sure they're eaten before adding more. or if not eaten, siphon them outta there.

yeah, i know it was a big mistake after there was left over in the tank..

after a couple hours, i realised that all the live worms i had in a plastic container have stopped moving, i think they are dead. are they still safe for consumtion?

I would get them all out of there and really I would not feed live food to fish unless it is the only thing they will eat. There is to high of a risk that the live food will transfer or bring in parasites to your tank. This can be especially true of tubeiflex worms.

did any get into the substrate?

do some heavy vac's if they got into the substrate..I had a bad experience once using tubifex . the lfs sugested them as a treat..the fish loved them but within a few weeks I was dealing with parasites.and they ones that didn't get eaten propagated in the substrate.(I fed them a few at a time but some fish just watched them float by)

definately clean them out of the filter..the dead ones wil pollute the tank prety quickly.

Same here with live tubiflex worms. My poor Jack Dempsey. freeze dried or frozen to me. The only live food I feed my fish is brine shrimp that I hatch.

i finally got a ammonia kit today. broke the bank man!

anyway, i was recommended against test strips so i got the test tube version.
when i got home, the smell of ammonia from the tank was so strong.. i did a test and the ammonia was more than 8ppm. i got crazy and i changed the filter wool and 50% of the water. the filter wool was all red and dead worms was stuck all over it.

i wasnt to worried about the bb because i have ceramic rings below the wool. or should i have left the wool there? i was thinking i dont want to pollute the new water so i better use new wool.

after all the changes, the test read off about 1ppm. i think that is much better.

is there any way to tell if the bb is still alive? thanks!

yes, much better but not good enough. more gravel vacuuming, more water changes and get that ammonia down. i think you did the right thing in removing the 'wool' and i'd give the ceramic rings a really thorough rinsing and inspection.
