The LFS has some Blue Acaras and I have been interested in getting one or two. Does anyone have any experience keeping them? What make good tankmates and what fish shouldn't be kept with Blue Acaras?

I have kept a pair of blue Acaras, they were lovely Cichlids. They were kept in a 400 litre aquarium with other relatively peaceful fish, including many catfish. They were pretty non-agressive. The male was larger, with more showy finnage, and they were happy with all their tank mates. Catfish and other fish of their size (they got to about 5" for the male and 4" for the female) are ideal. I would avoid keeping too many other Cichlids with them as they may begin to fight over territory, although mine were fine being in with a couple of Geophagus. I subsequently transferred the pair of Acaras to their own 3 foot aquarium to breed. They lay their eggs on a piece of slate, cared well for the young fry, there were about 100 babies, which I then grew up a bit and sold on.

They are great fish if you have a roomy aquarium.

I would say that if they were to be kept with fish a lot smaller than them that they may well eat them however!

Good luck!

Blue Acaras - Aequidens pulcher - are one of the first cichlids i owned, some 25 years ago. They are a relatively peaceful, central american that should be in a tank of at least 40gallons, preferably more. They get along with other semi-peaceful cichlids, such as severums, Firemouths, some of the geophagus species, etc. Would work with silver dollars as well, which, in a large tank, is a nice site. They are hardy and eat anything. Don't keep them with more aggressive species of cichlids. A very nice fish that colors up well - related to green terrors, and often confused with them when younger - make sure they really are blue acaras. Enjoy!

I guess I will wait a bit till I get some. My Tank is only a 20 gal. Thanks for the tips and advice. :dive2:
