Blue Eye rainbows and kuhlis?

I have a 10 gal tank with an AC 50 filter (and 5 black kuhlis who love to swim in the current.) I would like to add some blue eyed rainbows to the mix, but am unsure of which kind. My LFS currently has signifiers. (3 for $15) and I can get threadfins (Iriatherina werneri) for about 6 or 7 bucks each. They also apparently have a pretty good rainbow hookup and can get me pretty much whatever i want... the price is the only thing that would concern me.

After reading the thread Popondetta-Blue Eye...ever see or hear of them ? Fantastic fish..take a look ! I fell in love with so many kinds, but really liked the gertrudae, and the connieae.
Most said that they are a species only tank, but there was some talk of having cories in the tank. Would either one work with kuhlis? And if together they would be ok, what about my filtration? Would i need to get a smaller filter (less current) or do they like that?

If you have any other suggestions please let me know! thanks!!

Gertrudae are very very very very small. Species only, MAYBE panda cories. They are only 1" in size and very active. After having six in my 10 gallon and watching them for the last 1½ weeks, I doubt I will add anything else except a few more females.

I don't think the connieae is available in the aquaria trade over here. If they are, they are being kept by collectors who are not offering any for sale. I've not been able to find any. If you do find some, gimme a shout, eh? :)

p. signifier is a nice blue-eye, but imho furcatus has much nicer colors and is reminiscent of connieae, they are also available over here :) A nice size of 2", so they'd fit well in a 10g.

Just my 2 cents,
Roan

hey thanks Roan. I will go in tomorrow and see if he can get the connieae, if not I will see about the furcatus. (I’ll let you know one way or the other.)

How many do you recommend? should I go with three.. would five be stretching it?

I bet you are having fun watching your Gertrudae. If only I had an extra 10 gal sitting around! Well, I take that back, a tank would not cost so much, it is the filter, heater and lights… that setup would be a perfect addition to my desk up at school, then again I may never get anything done that way!

Thanks :) If he can't get either, I know a place on the web that sells Furcatus.

Nah, I'd do the full six for a school in a ten. They're just a tad bigger than a mature neon tetra. I'm probably going to add six more Gertrudae - hopefully females - to the 10 gallon I have. I think one reason they're "hyper" right now is because of a lack of females. Lot of male chasing male and displaying stuff.

Well, they're kinda hard to see :) You could get a little Eclipse 5g and have a school of 6 easy.

Go with a dark substrate, whatever you do. I've coral mixed in with my Flourite and it's too light to see them very well.

A 5 would not be too small for them? i figured with all their movment they would require more space to swim. I have a 5 with an sponge/airstone filter(ok?) that was/is a snails home. (i rearrange too much.) That could be converted.... :idea2: we will have to see what i can do about this latest idea.

Oh, and since we are on the rainbow discussion... i currently have 3 neon rainbows, awaiting more to be shipped in, that will be in my 30gal. I was planning on only 6, but would they like more in their group? I am planning on getting 5 botia darios for this tank too (with a AC 50 filter.)

good to know, currently the 10 has play sand in it, so it is a light brown. When i go to the store later today i should pick up some flourite to replace it. I have been meaning to try it in a planted tank for awhile, but never got around to it. ...then again the black kuhlis will be hard to see. Oh, well, i figure out a good compromise

I talked to the guy, and he is checking this week to see if he can get some connieae in next weeks order... and i told him to order the Gertrudae *blushes* An AC mini is not too much at big Als. Though i will just have to put up with play sand in the 10 for now.

He remembers the gertrudae being on the list of avaliable fish, but not the connieae. I am hopeful though cause his supplier has been breeding rainbows for the past 30 years.

As we chit-chatted, i mention that you, Roan, could not find them anywhere on-line and his face got a look of possibilities. Hopefully i will still be able to get them at a good price (being a good customer?) and he will wait to mark up the rest to sell online. :D If that is the case i will grab an extra 6 to send your way, Roan! Ok, so i might be jumping to gun here... but did i mention i am hopeful? hehe

That would be cool :)

I don't mind paying a mark up online, I just need to know where the site is :)

Oh! I bought some Melanotaenia dubulayi and the two "new" rainbows: Glossolepis pseudoincisus (Millenium rainbowfish), and Melanotaenia parva from Tanner. They'll be here Wednesday!

They have a site but they do not sell fish on there (yet?) I think he was thinking about aquabid.

The duboulayi is pretty, and the parva is wonderful. I looked on google and the pics of the parva there were much more colorful and fun than the one on shown on the rainbow site. Congrats on the new additions!
