ok this is the second blue paradise fish that i have bought, because the 1st one died and now the 2nd one is showing the same signs. Here's the tank and perameters: 55G community, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate <10ppm, ph 7.8, weekly water changes 35%, temp 81.

The symptoms are lethargic swimming, mainly stays at top, on really moves when it's feeding time, and doesn't move much then. Also on one of it's sides it a red "hole" that almost looks bloody, the other paradise fish had the exact same "hole" that started getting more notible after a few weeks and then he died. I can't believe that another fish would have done this since it looks exactly like the other one in the same spot. also he/she has lost all color and almost looks whitish now. will try to get a pic to upload.

Sorry but that doesn't sound very good. I know that when my bettas get older and ready to die they tend to oose their colour and get lethargic.

Is this guy from the same batch at the pet store? If so I would avoid that place until they get new stock.

Did they have these symptoms fromt he time they enetered the tank or did they develope them over the course a some days or weeks?

Also this is a good reason why you should think about a quarentine setup. Thsi fish may be bringing a disease to your tank. The other fish may be able to fight it off for now.

the fish showed no signs for over 3 weeks. it was from a different batch at the store but we only have one lfs, and it's going down the drain fast, most of the tanks now have ich, dead fish in about every other tank, sick looking fish, but they sell them anyway. I have stopped buying fish from there and drive about 40 miles to the nearest store to get fish, it's pretty sad when petsmart has better looking fish than your LFS :(

is it a paradise gourami?? if so my aquarium has lots of fish, and similar levels to yours. except that my ph is on the lower end, 6.2-6.4 ish. i have half a dozen paradise gourami's and they do well, might be ph, or might need to get a pair or two to make them 'happy' i dunno me. good luck.

well it said blue paradise, but from the looks it's a paradise gouromi, but i don't think he's in paradise right now, here some pics.

and yes he's still alive, i wouldn't go so far as say "kicking" also, he was behind the filter and i couldn't get him out so i put my hand back there to move him along and he didn't even move when my hand touched him. i'm thinking about euthenizing him, where in the store do i get clove oil??? pharmacy, cooking ????

Paradise fish or paradise gourami are the same thing. Gouramis, paradise fish and bettas are all the same group of fish.

Clove oil is generally found in health food stores and I think is sold as a tooth ache remedy. I use the freezing method, there is also an alcohol method. I believ there is an article in the article forum if you haven't already read it.

Those pics don't look very good. I have had bettas go that way before (after a year generally) and they never seem to recover but they can hang on for awhile.

Please remove that fish from your tank euathanize it immediately. He's not going to make it and it's possible he could spread whatever he has to your other fish.

It looks like a lot of diseases, none of which are very nice and some of whch are communicable.

I'll post a link for you to read up on in a minute.

Here's the link:

As you can see, some of those are just downright dangerous. Make sure you go down the page a bit to Fish TB.

If you ever have a fish start to display those types of ulcers, don't leave it in your tank.

well i went to euthenize him and he was already dead. :(

there has to be something with the breeder of the type of fish or something cause two in a row, same thing?

No idea, unfortunately. The only way to positively identify those types of diseases is with a pathological exam. And as the links I posted pointed out, most people can't afford something like that.

If you have a local University, they might try to do a culture for you for free. That's something if you really want to find out what it is. IF they can find out what it is.
