Blue Ram needs anger management.

My male ram just won't let up on the female...She was extremely good looking, and now she's got her stress colours on constantly. I'm assuming they're never going to pair up. They've been together about 3 weeks now and neither have shown any courting behavior.

Would adding another female help this problem? Or would there be a chance that my current female could get pushed out totally? I've had her longer and am quite attatched to her so I don't want that to happen.
 
Chris, I answered this over on the cichlid forum but I've had another idea since then. Perhaps you could lower the temp of the tank and harden up the water a bit. If your tank is 84-86, drop the temp to 80-82. (No lower...). It might get him out of the spawning mode.

How big is the tank?

The best bet may be to add a couple more females. I had 3 females and a male and the male still harassed all of the females. Fortunately, because there were three of them, he spread out the agression evenly.

Hi guys. Thanks for the responses.

Lupin: For some reason blue rams are quite difficult to come by around me, and I picked this one out because he was particularly nice. But it may come to swapping him. See the thing is I normally want to pick the most active in the store because it may mean he's the healthiest (at the time)...Sadly in doing so i picked a bully :(

number1sixerfan: The tank is 28 UK gallons, 33 US gallons. I would love to add another 2 females but they already share with 2 bolivian rams and 5 rams will certainly be enough, if not a push in this tank even though it is planted.

Cathy: This is something I've thought about, due to it being a community the temp is only 80. Maybe this is the problem...I don't know if you saw on Cichlid forum, but i noticed my Ph has gone to 7.2 as well since i took a piece of bogwood out...This coupled with a lower than normal for spawning temp may mean that I have to duck out of blue rams all together, which would be a shame because they're so **** cute :)
 
I don't know if this might help you.

I had the same sort of issue with my bolivian rams male & female purchased together as babys both are now adult size but he was ways going to her. Plus in the tank where Thomasi & Apistogramma Hongsloi which he was also letting his anger out on, but after I introduced a pair of baby bolivian rams in the tank all of that has stopped and my first pair of rams like all of the other fish have just paired off plus both sets of rams feed together, without an issues.
 
Before I gave up on them I'd add one more female. But, I'd remove him to a bucket with a filter/heater if at all possible and rearrange some stuff in the tank before adding him back. Put the new female in first.

Cathy: Yes I tried the mirror thing. He only seems interested when it's first put there, and then he loses interest. It's still there but it seems to be entertaining the platys at the mo. lol.
