Hello

Waiting to stock my 10 gallon once it has cycled - I love neons and planned to have a school of 6 or so. However, I have been researching Rams, and some of the information indicate that they do well with tetras as they are non aggressive, and that they can do well in a tank as small as 10 gallons! I never dreamed I could have cichlids in a 10 gallon - is it possible to stock a combination of neons and a pair of rams in a 10 gallon, without overstocking? I also will have a small cory.

There is so much information out there - your opinions on this would be appreciated.

1st German Blue Rams are sensitive to water conditions and I would recommend placing them into an established tank.

2nd, in a 10G w/ a school of neons and Corys the tank will be quite full IMO.

Neons should be in a school of 6 or more, and Corys really like their own species for company and enjoy groups of 4 or more.

The Rams might do 'okay' in a 10G, but that would be by themselves.

I was told one seems to do best in 15 gallons minimum. I'm at 12, and I still didn't try them. Saw some real cute ones (at Walmart no less!) but if they say 15, there must be a reason...

I kinda figured that I was pushing the envelope. Thanks for the feedback - I don't want to put undue stress on any of my wet pets. I will have to be content with a neon species tank for now. I am already itching to get a larger tank. Does that ever go away? Do you ever get a tank where you say, "o.k., that is big enough. I am content".

i would think you would be fine adding a pair of rams in a 10 gallon. maybe bring the neons down to 5. ive kept a pair in a 10 gallon and they were even more beautiful than when they were in my 38, and their color really came out and they laid eggs every 3 weeks, but thats just my personal experience, and then again there was nothing else in the tank.

What kind of filter do you have on it?

If you did attempt this, you would definately have to keep up with water changes.

Well it's not a great recommendation, but if you plant to get a better setup in the near future, you could try the Rams and see how it goes, especially if you could return them to the seller if it didn't work out... that decision is up to you whether to try a Ram or two in that amount of space. They are very sensitive - I thought I had issues with my dwarf gourami, but at least I don't need to worry about it not eating like Rams often do, and other issues with them.

As far as itching to go bigger - maybe I'm the only one who went with the recommended 29g and disliked it very much, and I'm very happy with my 12g. I have no desire to get bigger or more - with the exception that it'd be nice to have a 5g Betta setup elsewhere, but I manage with my awesome little 12.

For most of us, it never goes away. I've had as many as 7 tanks at once, ranging from 5-55 gallons... now my biggest is 75! Just wait until the SW bug bites you.. then you're really in trouble!!!

while this is a bit OT, I agree with this statement. corys should be in groups of their own kind, and generally speaking the smaller the cory the bigger the groups they like. I also want to add that a 10G is a little small for some of the more common cory types like bronze as they can get fairly large as adults and should really be in tanks of 20Gs+ IMO. your best bet for cories in your tank would be to go with dwarf corys in a group of about 6-7 or panda corys in a group of about 4. that and a school of neons and perhaps some inverts like shrimp and snails would round out the tank pretty well. you might be able to squeeze something like a betta in, but I prefer to keep my tanks slightly understocked.

No, she shouldn't. Rams need atleast a 20g tank IMO, and you'll here that from most people.

5 Neons isnt a big enough school for them.

Corys need atleast 4 of their own kind, and the common kinds (Peppered, Bronze, Albino) get around 2.5".

I would say get a 20g, 10 neons, 1-2 rams (male and female), and 5 Panda or 6 dwarf corys, if you get a 20 Long you might be able to have 3 or so otos for algae control.

For a 10g, no corys, they get too big for that sized tank, but you could have 6 neons (not enough IMO) and a dwarf gourami or peaceful betta if you wanted, and snails for the algae. You'd be quite stocked then.
