Hi gang. Just read that you can keep Blue Rams (Microgeophagus ramirezi) in a community tank, but they recommend only keeping a pair. I have pencilfish, plecos, corys, glass cats, sewellia lineolata, and killifish now, with some wrestling half beaks coming in a while. Would a pair of these rams fit in with my mix and match tank ? Thanx.

:iagree: However, as to your question, yes they can work in some community tanks but not all. Their requirements are a bit unique and they demand a much higher quality water than most fish do. Temp is another factor that oftentimes differs form those of a typical community tank.

As for the pair, yes I would certainly say only 2 and a male/female pair, not 2 of the same sex.

Lastly, if there is aggression it will be limited to species only or by territory during breeding.

i think you should work on what you already have in there before adding more.

plecos - how many, what kind?
glass cats - how many?
how good are you about water changes and keeping the water clean with 0 ammonia/nitrite and low nitrate? bad water kills rams.

8 plecos-3 x L333 at 1", 1 ABN at 2", 2 L399/400 at 4", 1 L015 at 3", and 1 L254 (we think ?) at 4". 3 glass cats. I do 40-50% water changes once a week, and my params are fine. I'm not looking for right now, I'm gathering info for a later date. Right now I am pretty well stocked (and then some maybe !) Thanx.

i have 4 blue rams in my comm tank and they are fine the mles show off to the females and then to each other by swimming towards each other and then stopping side by side and flicking each other with their tails its quite ammusing!!!

Lupin, I'll try and get some pictures of my plecos and the hillstream loaches. Unfortunately, the only one I see on a regular basis is the ABN. And the loaches are like kamikazes. I might have to tranquilize one to get a picture of it !! I'll work on them. Thanx for the advice.
