I wanted to add these to my cichlid tank add wanted to know how many to add, do they have to be kept in schools? also they eat a lot of live food, but I have malawi Cichlids who are herbivores so I dont want to add live food to the tank because they might eat it. Will the botias be OK with only veggies?

If they are going in your 20 gal tank where you already have:

I recently bought:

2 elcetric blue johnni,
2 socolfi
2 yellow labidichromis

for my 20g tank

then, no.

From what I know the 55 should be okay, with the fish you have, however to get the botia to display their best color they will need live brine. Maybe HBH african sinking pellets will substitute?

Can I buy just 1 or is it suggested to keep more than 1?

I believe, as with most loaches, trios are nice for them. They need lots of hidey holes also.
