Brakish Algae eaters

What level of salinity will the brackish setup be? What fish do you want? There are some marine snails that will tolerate high brackish conditions, but finding plants to suit will be tough. There are a number of fish--mollies being first on the list--but a lot will depend on what other fish you want in there. I think scats will also eat algaes--but get to be substantial fish, so won't work if this is a small tank.

And the scats will eat the plants anyway.

Olive Nerites (snails) withstand the full range of BW.

Planted brackish above ~1.003 and below ~1.018 is very hard unless you live where you can collect. There are no plants in the trade that are reliable in mid-range BW.

I’m planning later on to set up a brackish tank with figure 8 puffers. It will be 40 gallon tank so i might be able to squeeze in 3. Specific gravity I’m planning on is about 1.006.

From what research ive done, it seems ill have to go out and collect specimens from the tidal flats of Oregon. Ill have to experiment to see of the plant species here in the cold waters of Oregon can survive warmer water.

So you guys know of no algae eating fish that can tollerate those levels? BTW, how do saltwater aquarist control algae?

depends on the type of algae, but snails and hermits are what most people use.

i live in corvallis oregon and have had fairly good success finding plants in the bays and so forth and little coastal creaks that do good int brackish tanks. java fern and anubius also work really well.
