I have a 29g tank with livebearers 1 pleco 4 silver dollars 2 angelfish , 1 oscar and 2 african dwarf frogs. About 2 weeks ago my angel fish had eggs
and the next morning they were all gone .Does anybody know how to make them breed again? All posts are welcome :bowing:
Unless you purchased a proven breeding pair, you don't know if you have a pair. Two females will look like they are breeding also. Your tank is also too crowded to try to breed anything. There too many hungry mouths around to feast on the eggs. That tank will be too small for only the Oscar when he grows up.
unfortunantly, Z's right, your tank is overstocked. An Oscar alone gets too big for a 29gal, and 2 angel fish get waay to big for a 29, as does a pleco. You're gonna run into serious agression soon, and your eggs disapeared becuase they were eaten by the other fish.
Breeding fish need a lot of space, and a 29gal tank isnt gonna do it for a pair of Angels.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, hope you can figure something out
They probably werent eaten by the other fish, if angels don't feel they're in a secure place they eat their eggs so the other fish CAN'T eat them. It happens all the time in my community tank. Angel's are so skittish when it comes to caring for eggs that even a light timer going off can result in them eating their eggs. Angels are far too psychotic when brood caring to let anything eat their eggs. They would die before they that happen. The reason they've done so well in the amazon basin is because they do this, it allows them to get the protein to use for future spawnings rather than other fish. It happens FAST too, far too fast for even an oscar or silver dollar to get to it first.
As for overstocking, you have to lose the oscar and the pleco. Your tank isn't even big enough to keep angels long term. If you got rid of the oscar, the pleco AND the silver dollars (which also get WAY too big for a 29g) you may be able to raise the angel eggs to fry. You also have to provide a good diet for them before it will happen again. Flake foods will not be enough, you need frozen foods. I feed my angels mysis shrimp, blood worms, brine shrimp daily and live black worms every couple days. My pair spawns as much as they possibly can, about every 3 weeks to the day, and time! Every time it hits that 21st day I do a 50% water change and the next day they spawn! immediately after changing the water they begin cleaning sword leaves, almost instantly.
a 29g should be enough to breed angels short term, but you need something bigger for them in the future, something like a 55 gallon.
As for the pair issue, unless you've seen the female laying the eggs and the male ferilizing them you'll never know whether you actually have a pair. Females have been known to form "lesbian" bonds in home aquaria where the female will lay the eggs and the other "female" will follow with mock fertilizing runs. Watch for a milky fluid comming from the male when it does it's fertilizing run next time.
