hello I've had tanks for awhile n never had anything breed on me now my Managuense and jack dempsey have a clutch of egss and it looks to me like 29 of them have been fertilized i thought it was impossible for them to even breed together i would appreciate any and all information anyone might have on jack dempseys breeding and also Managuense's
Many cichlids can interbreed. The popular parrot cichlids are a croos between different species. The offspring often are not fertile but sometimes they are.
Many here will question the ethics of such a cross. Interspecies hybrids, if fertile, risk "polluting" the gene pool of their respective species if distributed in the hobby. Also as in the parrots the offspring may have deformities that are again considered by some to be unethical. My opinion is not to raise the offspring.

Once a rumor got started, it never stops but keeps spreading. Blood Parrot is not a hybrid, but a mutant debormed Red Devel from in breeding. In fish, hybrid offspring are typically fertile, not sterile. Repetitive in breeding of fish will eventually create deformed mutants which become infertile because of the mutated recessive genes they carry. Flowerhorn is a bybrid of several CA cichlids, perfectly fertile and not deformed. Blue Dampsey and Blood Parrots are in bred mutants, deformed and infertile. Don't be confused with mammals. Hybrid mammal offspring are typically infertile.
Regarding crossing of Dampsey with Manaquen, it is possible and has occured many times before. All CA cichlids come from one single family line, Cichlidsoma, and will readily cross breed. Convict cichlid, the most commonly tank raised CA speices, has reported cross bred with dozen of other CA including Dampsey, Salviini, Manaquen, Midas . . . . etc.
wow you do learn something new everyday. My opinion on the hybrid "jackauenses" is that you should let them have the fry and let them raise the babies.
Tiger15, one question, Im not doubting you im just curious, you know the Sunshine bass the striped bass and whitte bass hybrid, they are sterile yet they are hybrids and not inbred, just wondering if you can clearify it for me....thanks
