I was wondering if anyone here knows how to breed gambusia. My friend has a pond that is totally overrun with these little fish and everytime I go over I bring a few home and use them as feeders. I wan't to know if I can do an outdoor breeding setup with something like a 20g rubber maid tote. I can will still feed them and I will also do water changes. I am not really sure how I should go about doing this. Is it really as simple as adding fish and water, or is there something else to it? :1zhelp:

You will have to have lots of hiding places. Mosquito fish are aggressive fry eaters. If you want feeder production get some Endler's. They don't usually bother the fry.

I am planning to get the largest bin I can, but it depends on price. My budget is fairly low so I can make a really large pond. How could I hook up a filter to this? The setup will be outdoors because my mom will kick me out if I get another tank.

just get some floating plants, and you'll be overrun with mosquitofish, you will need a filter of some sort though, and wild caught mosquito fish are very prone to disease, and wild caught mosquitofish do sometimes carry a paracite that only affects mosquitofish

What else can I feed gambusia? I live nearby a stream and some small ponds (overrun with crazy green sunfish) so I was thinking of sweeping the water to collect small inverts and such. Also, what should the ratio of males to females be? I am hearing some people saying that there should be more males to females.

mine eat flake

3 females to 1 male seems to be the best mix that i have found.
