breeding neons

Certainly it's been done! They aren't easy to breed though and I've read that they aren't bred commercially anywhere in the US. This is most likely because they are difficult to breed and sell for so little money it's probably not worth the hassle profitwise for fish farms, not because it's impossible to breed them at all.

Check out this link for lots of sites with more information. Good luck to ya! I hope to try this myself some day, sounds like a fun and challenging project :)

Actually, if you get conditions right then Neons breed very easily. The water must be soft and acidic, and the breeding tank well planted. I have Neons spawn regularly in my community tank among the plants, but obviously all the eggs get eaten.

Ah, you are a lucky one thom336. I have yet to experience neons breeding in a community tank at home. I take a pair and place them in a java moss covered floor where the tank is completely covered by a cardboard box with a small round opening at the top for dim light. Rasing the temp to 30 deg. C has helped. I feed them with live food, daphs or mosquito larvae and if I'm lucky there are eggs in 48 hours.

Mine generally go into this 'bush' of Red Ludwigia, temp at 25.5C. I think it is advisable to have 3 males to a female when breeding, and to keep the eggs in complete darkness once they are laid until the fry hatch.
