O.K. I am planning to buy a breeding trap. Here is the Link for the one I like.
But I read on this forum that these sort of traps can cause stress to the fish and they can abort the pregnancy. What do you guys think I should do to protect the fry.

I have a planted tank, but not too many plants.

I guess that a no on the Breeding trap then.. :)
It is from me. I am one who doesn't believe in them. SO much stress. If you are really worried about the fry surviving, then a variety of plants can help. Have some floating hornwort, have some taller leafy stem and broad leaf plants, and then som lower and leafy ground cover. Once you see the mother either birthing or notice she is skinny and if you are really concerned about the frys' welfare, you could remove them to a cycled grow out tank or even buy a specially made tank divider to keep the larger fish away from them for the first 2-3 weeks while they grow large enough to escape the hungry jaws of the other fish.

Maybe not a breeding trap, but a breeding net ($6.00-LFS) filled with java moss. Maybe a little stressful for mom, but it's only temporary. More plant suggestion is best though.

You're right Zman, giving them their own tank is best, but for most of us setting up a new tank is not an option for whatever reason (girlfriend, wife, budget). You've been at this a long time, if you couldn't set up another tank, what would you do in a pinch?

PS your web site and articles have helped me out alot. Thanks.

For my guppy fry I use a sump system.
Not ideal for everyone, I know.
But, when the fry are born, the get pushed by the current down into the 10G sump tank. There, they grow up and when they're big enough, I put them back into the 50 so they can make me more babies :)

My breeding trap did just that......it trapped - my veil-tailed angel between it and the wall - I couldn't believe she survived. I was so mad at myself. I've read other posts of other fish that got caught between the trap and the wall and didn't survive. I hate the thing and will never use it again.
