I think I got a bristle worm out of my tank by accident. My purple tang died (I just found the bones today). I was using a net to get the bones out and I saw this tiny, 0.25 inch worm. It was primarily very dark blue with a red head and little white legs all along the body.

Is that a bristle worm? Sorry I didn't think to take a picture before iI flushed it.
Is it good or bad? Could it have killed a 4" Tang?

It's not likely. Most bristleworms are considered "good" and can be great scavengers. It's really tough to say what it was without a picture. Is there a way you can find an identical picture online?

Really sorry about your Tang. How long have you had it? What kind of corals and other fish do you have? There are lot of possibilities.

Sorry to hear about the loss of a tang, well, any fish in fact, its always a shame. I would say the worm was just being a scavenger and we cant really give you a postive ID without a pic am sorry..

I agree with 5XEVY, it does not sounds like a bristle worm to me..

Why do people have the idea that if they can't identify it then they should kill it......? The whole idea of getting good live rock, is the introduction of a multitude of un-identifiable's (maybe not for the G man).

Sorry for the loss of the Tang, however if it was a bristle worm, and the tang had died of "natural" causes (i.e. it hadn't killed it), then it actually would of been doing you a favour.

And I'm sure that there are more in there - in fact I'm almost positive I saw one bury itself while I was picking the bones of my best fish out. I chose to ere on the side of caution and flush the one I had in the net - rather than loose the rest of my prized livestock. The feedback I received here was going to dictate whether or not the tank got broken down to remove a harmful hijacker.

Thanks to 5xevy and Atnixon for the constructive advise!

And thanks to you for the critical reply with the slight "better than thou" tone, adopted by so many, that retards my willingness to post on this forum.

dude that suxz to loose a tang I would not know what to do if I lost one of mine (besides take it out of the tank) Maybe you should post some of your water paramaters to see if anything was off. Or maybe your tang had HLLE (head and Lateral Line Errosion) hmmm tangs are a bit of a mystery as to why they one day die.

Thanks for the sympathy. This one was extra special to us too for reason that would take way too long to tell.

DUDE---now I can't find my Solorensis wrasse. WTF?!? The coral beauty and two perculas are fine - so far. The only other things in there are 10 tiny hermits and 10 snails.

Sorry to hear of your loss i hope theres no more, the only small piece of advice is somthing an old guy in a lfs told me, take your time and when all going wrong or somthing seems amiss stop wash your hands and have a cup of t or coffee or whatevers your poison because another 5 mins will make no difference and instead of ripping apart a settled envirment what your looking for may appear.
