Brown algae problem. Needs help.

how did you cycle your tank? my guess is that with the low levels of rock and weak (freshwater) filtration, your tank may well have taken 6 months to fully cycle... that being said an outbreak of brown scum is normal and a decent cleanup crew will solve the issue -with a good water change!

how did you cycle your tank? do you have a cleanup crew? what kind of critters? how often do you do water changes? what is your lighting like? how long do you keep the lights on? is your tank near a window?

also, i think RO units are great, but I don't have one. before you jump out and buy an RO unit, have your tap water tested at your LFS. In the meantime I'd take the suggestion above and use bottled water from the supermarket.....
if you tap water does have issues, then weight the options between bottled water and an RO unit.

An RO unit is a really smart choice even if your tap water isn't bad, since the city can change what they put in their tap at any moment. Last night, I did a 50% water change, which cut the nitrates from 80 ppm to 20 ppm. I'm doing a 20% tonight which should do the job!

I used fish to cycle my tank (2 perculas, 1 blue devil) now I have 2 perculas, 2 blue devils, 4 blue green chromis, 1 royal gramma, 2 scissortail dartfish, and a lawnmower blenny.

Cycling: Fish; 2 perculas, 1 devil

Cleanup: No, getting one later this month from liveaquaria.com

Critters: 2 perculas, 2 blue devils, 4 green chromis, 1 royal gramma, 2 scissortail dartfish, and 1 lawnmower blenny.

Lighting: 10 hrs., flourescent, coralife full actinic bulbs

Windows: No.

glad to hear that your RO unit is working out for you.
It sounds like your algae outbreak is normal... my guess is that the nitrates and algae are separate issues... putting a cleanup crew in there will probably help take care of things. When I had my brown outbreak I added a couple of spiny turbo snails and a handfull of crowned astrea snails and within 3 days there wasn't even a trace of the brown stuff.
