Okay, so this is my first "real" tank. It's a 20 gallon. 1 female betta, 2 mickey mouse platys, 3 sunburst platys, and a few ghost shrimp. There are also two plants. I was told they were both hornwort, but i think one is not. (I'll make a dif thread for that.)

Anyways, my tank has been up and running for about a month. I haven't had any issues until the past three days. The first was that one of my then 3 mickey mouse platys was beat up. I seperated her as soon as i saw the damage, but she ended up dying that night.

I noticed soon after that there was some brown algae growing on my filter. New filter btw. It is on the intake valve, and just around the edges. it also creeped onto the glass. I wiped it up that day, but it is back now, only a day later. I would like to know how to solve this? I was thinking adding more plants?

Diatoms are fairly common in new setups and oftentimes just need to run their course before disappearing completely. For now I would just continue to wipe off what you can...adding more plants certainly cannot hurt though.
