Brown Algae

I noticed this morning that my tank has started to grow brown algae on the glass. There is not much, just several spots here and there, but it wasn't there yesterday. I keep my tank clean. It will be a month old tomorrow. It has finally finished cycling.

Is it time for an algae eater, or is there something else I should do? Any suggestions on what type of algae eater I should get? My tank is a fresh water 54 gallon corner tank.

Thanks,
Lisa

You could get a pleco, or a couple of smaller ones (bristlenose) or get a larger group of ottos. I'd stay away from the "algae eaters" they tend to get aggressive as they get bigger.

Ok...several ottos and just one bristle nose pleco, or should I get more of each? Ottos are kind of boring looking...but I know they do their job! :p:

I think most algae eaters (except snails and shrimp) are pretty boring looking. So I bought some otos just for cleanup purposes. Well, I fell in love with them! Those little guys are so playful with each other.

Really? Maybe I should get 3 of them then. I love to watch my fish play! Would you recommend two plecos?

I would just wait it out unless you really want an algae eating fish. I consider brown algae as part of the cycling process. It usually shows up right after Nitrite Crash get really bad and "appears" to be unmanagable for a few weeks. Then out of the blue it vanishes. It is just part of the tank stabilization process. I would just wait it out.

6 Plecos??

And yup, I could NOT get my nitrites down for the life of me and boom it is down to 0!!

i think she means 6 ottos or one common pleco or two bristlenose pleco

Thanks. Don't think my tank is big enough for 6 plecos!!! AND I don't want to have water problems AGAIN!!
