Brown Algae

I wouldn't add otos to a tank that isn't completely cycled. I'd really wait until its matured a bit more, maybe 3 months old or so. Unless you used established media.

Otos don't really do well in a new tank. If you do decide to add otos be very careful acclimating them. I took twice the usual time acclimating mine and only lost 1. I floated the bag for an half hour and then added about half cup of tank water every 30 minutes after doing this 3 times I adding a full cup of tank water every 30 minutes 2 times. After 30 minutes I added them to the tank.

They really do prefer an established tank though.

just curious, but how long was it after you added them that you lost the one? i just got 3 otos about a week ago and they're all doing really well pigging out on my algae.

Another way to control the algea on the glass is to buy an algea magnet cleaner. They make them for glass and acrylic aquariums. I have lots of algea eaters in my tank but I still use it to clean the front of my tank so that I have a nice view of my tank. I leave the other 3 sides so that there is algea for my aquatic creatures to eat. It's just another option to help control the algea while your tank stablizes.

I have seen those. I'll see how the plecos do and if I need one I'll get it. I'm sure I can get one at the LPS. It's unreal how that algae can just appear overnight.
