We have an onion plant that we added about 3 weeks ago to our relatively new 10 gal tank (about 4 months) that's starting to turn soft and brown at the base. The leaves appear green and healthy, though. We have some Java ferns and hornwort that do pretty well too. Anybody have any thoughts about this?

Definitely not in healthy state. You should pull it and remove all the decaying brown and slimy material. If ou have to strip a leat or two, that's ok. Replant it but make sure part of the bulb is aboce the gravel. 1/4 - 1/2 inch. Good luck

Thanks I'll give it a try. I'm a little surprised since I've read that they'll grow pretty well in most conditions.

having planted two onion plants in my 10 gallon, let me give you a word of advice...

BE PREPARED TO TRIM

AND TRIM

AND TRIM

AND TRIM........

i would just try to remove the affected area, and replant the onion, making sure to keep the bulb above ground.
