Brown Water

Hello.
I just recently changed about half of the water in my 55 gallon tank. And the water is browner then ever. Doesn't brown water mean DEAD algae? And green water means fresh growing algae? Well, the water went from clear, to brown in one day.
What causes this so quickly? I thoroughly rinsed out the sponge in my filter and it hasn't helped. Sometimes I think I'm doing more harm then good when changing the water. I would also like to add that I use a water filter when changing the water. Should I change the water again?
How can I stop this? If the algae is brown, it's already dead and using an algae remover chemical wouldn't help, right?

Please help.

How long has the tank been set up? Is driftwood in there?

When you say the water is brown, do you mean muddy brown or more like a weak tea solution?

Like a tea solution.
What makes algae grow so fast in one tank compared to another? Does algae like higher temperatures?
I'd like to mantian my algae growth, and try to stay away from all those algae destroyer chemicals.
