I need to know if i can use a five gallon bucket that has been used numerous times to wash cars with soap to add water back into my fish tanks. Is there any way to clean the bucket??? Thank you.

I'm sure if you rinsed it again and again and again and again it would eventually be safe but it is not worth the risk, IMO. I would buy a new bucket.

Brand new 5 gallon buckets are $5 at Lowes; Cheap insurance for your fishies!

In the paint department...

Buy a new bucket..can get them as cheap as 99 cent for a three gallon at walmart.. Don't chance it.

Oh BUll

I am using a large plastic trashcan to fill my tank up right now that has had soap in it numerous times. I rinsed it out real good and have absolutely NO problems with it whatsoever. I would say rinse it with very hot water the first time and then rinse it several more times with cold.

Just get a new bucket.

they have ones with a thick foam handle which is really nice and doesn't dig into your hands, and with a space on the bottom for your other hand to support the bucket as your pour. only $5, and worth the money.

or go all-out and get a python. definitely worth the investment in time saved, no spills, and no back pain.

I'm glad that you have had success with your bucket, but it only takes one mistake with chemicals to wipe out the entire tank. If the fish cost more than the new bucket does, why take the chance?

WHat Chance?

The bucket has been rinsed out completely. NO soap residue remained. Of course if you think there is still residue I would not even think of using it, but since there is not it is a great tool.

Even better, if you want cheap/free - go down to your local bakery and get the icing buckets. Generally only a 3 gallon bucket which is easier on your back, and they are free. The icing all comes out super with just some real hot water (put it in your dishwasher and sanitize it). I use them all the time, and took a red marker and wrote in big letters "fish water - keep clean" so no one will grab it for some other household project like mopping the floor or something.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with spending $5 on a bucket - I was once told by someone wiser than I - "fishkeeping is not a hobby for those pinching pennies". Seems that is more true than I originally realized looking around our home at all the tanks and the expensive fish in them
