I have ordered a fair number of fish by mail and had usually excellent results--except with shellies (neolamprologus multifasciatus). One shipment of 4 arrived all DOA like yours. Three others had at least one deceased out of 4, either at arrival or during/shortly after acclimation.
and the ones that did make it through that ordeal, four in all, just never thrived for me. They lived for several months, seemed "happy" enough, paired up 2 by 2, and then over the course of another few months, all died one by one. Only tankmates were some endlers, so no predation; no obvious signs of disease, injury, parasites etc. They just turned up floating in the morning. Maybe they didn't like my water, I dunno. The endlers did fine.
So I gave up on shellies. Hope you do better with them in the future, those who can keep them successfully seem to enjoy them very much.
