Unfortunately, in order to stay in business, most stores will just sell you anything. They can't afford to worry about whether you have a proper tank or the proper environment to adequately care for the fish. Reality is quite sad...

This was a decent mom and pop type place in the past (I think they have a total of 2 stores around here). I haven't been in there in a few years and was surprised and unhappy with the change. The big chain stores here do a good job of labeling tanks, even down to putting variety names. I didn't see any real bargains. The stock wasn't healthy enough to make that kind of gamble anyway.
Luckily we do have 2 little independent stores that will get my business. One is more reef oriented, one is all freshwater but a much longer drive.
