How can I tell if my Bushynose is getting enough to eat? I never see him eating and I even put a piece of zucchini in the tank and had to take it out after 2 days and nobody touched it. He was a dark brown color when I first got him now he is a grey color - not sure if that means anything? My tank readings are all good.

He sometimes swims around the tank like a maniac - almost crashing into the side glass. I was just worried that I'm not getting him food. I've watched him at night and he swims on the other side of the tank from where I drop the Spirulina tabs. Even if they are under his nose he seems to somehow miss them..

If he's getting enough to eat you'll be able to see that his belly is rounded. The way you describe him dashing around the tank doesn't sound too good - is there something that startles him, or other fish that are picking on him? Does he have a hiding place to call his own and a piece of driftwood in the tank (essential for his well-being)?

Treat him like a baby

Hi

My lfs told me to experiment since I also feared mine wasn't eating, he didn't eat the veggies (tried spinach, zuccini, lettuce and cucumber) and nadda, then I bought some bottom feeder "tablets" (tetra something can't check, coz I'm at the office) still nadda, bought red granuley type stuff (other fish seemed more interesed than he was) so I started to stress assuming that the algae wouldn't be enough (since I can't see any) then poof two days ago after alternating between the red stuff and the tablets (I always drop them off near to where he is) he launched at it like a rocket and that was that :dance , now he seems like a bit of a bully when it comes to those tablets if anybody goes near one he chases them away... So IMHO what may work is patience, keep on swopping (try one kind at dawn and a different one before you put the lights out) treat him like one would treat a toddler and if nothing is actually wrong with him he should decide what he likes.

:p

It took awhile for my clown pleco to discover food as well. I dropped in nutrifin basix for the bottom feeders, and all of the fish go nuts for them. Then I drop spirulina for him, and the others don't like the algae tabs sooooo its all for him. It took about a week until I actually saw him feeding. I think they are more sensitive to their invironment than most fish. In time he will stake out a place, and realize no harm will come to him. You should designate an area to be the feeding area, a bit sheltred but where you can see him/her, near his chosen hangout. Turn out th aquarium lights, keep a low roomlight on, and in time you'll see him feed.

Now my clown comes out in the day, under his driftwood, and peeks out to see whats going on. Now, he comes out and grabs a stray bloodworm when I feed my ghost knife. I've had him a month now and he gets a bit bolder as time goes by. Have patience, he'll eat when he feels secure. (I think)

No fish are bothering him and he has plenty of hiding spots and lots of driftwood. That's where he hangs out most of the time.

He doesn't seem to be shy as he comes out a lot in the day too. He comes and goes as he pleases and doesn't even get frightened when I'm in the tank poking around. I have been trying to use Spirulina tablets mainly and the fresh foods. Hard to tell if he's getting any or not.

Slice a zuchini the long way, not across like circles, and use an elastic to secure it to a rock. Place it near his hideout. I guarantee you'll see little eaten out bits, or he'll be stuck to the top of it.

I'll try it again... do you blanch yours?
