Can anyone recommend me a good but realtively cheap digital camera, that would be good for this hobby? and be able to take up close shots? thanks

I prefer the Canon PowerShot SD300 for around 250, the SD400 or S410 for around $330 on amazon. The Sony MVCCD500 for around $520 ish. The Olympus Camedia C755 for around 250. An Olympus D580 isnt bad either but could be better. That's around $160.

Oh... and the Nikon Coolpix 4800 is nice too at around $240.

Key things you need to look for:

Macro functions
Large capacity memory available for it. 700-1000 meg (1 gig) or better suggested.
High Megapixel 4-6 mega pixel is advised

Also find the higher optical zoom you can find. digital zoom is "worthless" because all it does it make your pictures grainy by "calculating" bigger pixels by using less megapixels. In otherwords if you have a 4 megapixel camera you might end up getting an image the size of a 4 megapixel phot but with the quality of only 2 megapixels or something because the digital zoom ignores the outer pixels on the CCD image sensor and only uses the middle ones.

I love my Canon SD400 so I'll second that recommendation. Lately, I've been wanting the S400 though (the biggest difference is the actual size of the camera being thinner, and the LCD is bigger). I've also had the Nikon Coolpix 2100 (an older model) before my Canon and it was a great deal for the price. I don't doubt the latest versions are holding up to the same good expectations of the older models.

A place who's reviews I trust in this area is CNet. They'll give you the best budget buys, the best mid-range cameras, and the best pro cameras with user reviews as well as their own.

just "for the record" I use a Canon EOS 10D SLR Digital. I hope to replace it with a 20D when finances allow.

Cheap is a relative term of course... compared to the 10 or 20 D most cameras are "cheap" That's why I suggested a couple in the 500ish or less ball park

I think the canon A510 or A520 would be great.

I have two cameras right now. I have a Canon A75 and a 20D. I love both of them. I also had a rebel right before the 20D. I sold that to a friend when he kept insisting I help him out buy selling a used camera so he can afford to go Digital SLR. I helped... and went up to a 20D :)

Anyway they are all good.
