Can a canister filter be used as a refugium?

I have a brand new XP3 canister filter and was wondering if it would be possible to use it as a refugium?

Never mind, I am an idiot. Refugiums need a light source right? Grrr, I got a lot to learn....

So are canisters good for anything in a SW setup?

Don't sweat it, lots of people have asked the same question. Canisters can be used for added water circulation and to run medai if/when you need it. The thing to remeber with canisters and HOB filters is that you need to keep them clean and not allow detritus to collect in them. Also, if you are using any kind of filter floss of sponges, those should be cleaned (or replaced) frequently (may even mean a couple times per week).

Yea I have read lots on certain filter media becoming nitrate traps. I guess if nothing else, I should be able to sell the XP3 and buy a few powerheads instead. Seems like that might be a bit more efficient. Thanks again bro!

A refugium only needs light if you're growing algae in it. A cryptic zone is also a refugium and requires no light. The main problem is the flow is too great.

So I just searched for "cryptic zone" throughout the forum, and found nothing relating to the topic of refugiums... Would someone mind explaining exactly what a cryptic zone is?

Depends upon what you are trying to accomplish. Sponges and many filter feeders greatly appreciate the water motion. Many canisters have a profusion of them, especially in the lower open layers. Amphipods also appreciate mechanical media. Other organisms, alternatively, won't be terribly appreciative of the flow, like many worms, copepods, etc.

i feel more confused and educated at the same time! I love this hobby!! Thanks guys!
