Can a convict live in a 20 gallon tank?

I would look for a fish that is a little bit smaller for a 20 gallon tank. A pair of bolivian rams would be perfect for a 20 gallon high tank. Some of the smaller more mellow "convict-types" might work, but the normal convicts get a little big an aggressive for such a small tank.

I would keep it bare bottom, and take the eggs out before they hatch. A 30 gallon would be much better for a full grown pair. They get too big for a 20 long IMO.

I doubt that would be enough space for two convict cichlids to raise fry, for the female to get away from the male, and for both fish to establish a territory. If you want to keep convicts upgrade to a bigger tank or maybe try a pair of dwarf cichlids. For example, kribensis.

not much just probably some snails.
If you don't already have it, I would get a female. They have more color, and stay a little smaller. And a single convict with some snails would be fine in a 20 long.
