can goldfish go here please???????

I have a goldfish probably about 3 inches had him for a while in a pretty large bowl,
he's been terrorized of late by the nephew in his gruesome twosomes and i was wondering If i could safely put the goldfish in my 40 HEx with currently 4 cichlids about a 3 or 4 inch sebra , smaller yellow top, acci and other random cichlid

So basicly can a goldfish live with cichlids of aproximatley the same size? right now there will only be 4 or 5 other cichlids in the tank with him, lots of places to hide??
thanks

I don't know if cichlids have the same temp. as goldfish .. goldfish like the temp very very low ..

You know, if it is a matter of him getting killed from your nephew, then moving makes sense. Goldfish are adaptable and hardy and can handle a wide range of water temps and hardnesses. What is the temperature differential between your bowl and tank? What you should do is get a small heater that is set to the temp of the bowl (test it's setting on a pail of water), and over the next week, slowly raise the temp a degree every couple of days. If the temp differential is more than about 6 or 7 degrees, you might want to decrease the temp in your cichlid tank. After you've got the temp, do a couple of water changes, using water from your 40g tank. If after a couple of weeks, your GF is doing OK in the bowl, then you'll know that the water quality/temp is not the issue.

Is this a fantail or a comet? I ask this because normal comets are pretty robust fish and can eat just about anything. A comet should be able to survive on standard flake food and not suffer if it ate cichlid food. What are you feeding your cichlids? A comet should also be able to avoid any pugnacious fish you already have in your tank. A fantail/veiltail body type is going to have more problems competing.

I'd be curious as to how it goes, if you do this. We are always told that it is best not to mix GF with other species, and I don't on my two tanks, but I'd be interested in hearing how this goes... E-mail me if you have any more questions, or with the results.

Best luck,

Val

thanks for posin those questions i didn't even think about the temp thing,

the goldfish which i'm not sure what kind, its one of those slender ones it was a rescued feeder fish a few years ago its basicly all orange, it had a few black like freckles or birht makrs on the head but I believe they are gone as it got older and biger. the bowl is just room temperature so 67 or 70 proly,
the cichlid tank is i think closer to 80 and i just feed regular tropical flakes for them

so for preventing shock i'm not sure how you slowly acclimate the fish to the tank,

but i guess its not really worth the risk either. the fish isn't in danger of dyin, but it would just make thigns a lot easier so that we dont have ot yell at him every few minutes

I think Arkylady and Darkangels suggestion to move the bowl would be best.

The comet is a pretty fast fish and he might survive for a while. I'm not a cichlid expert, but many cichlids are not exactly slow and it would probably only be a matter of time before A) the goldfish became lunch or B) the goldfish succummed to the stress of living in that environment. Goldfish are not a naturally a hide-in-the rocks or plants type of fish (unless they're scared or sick).

ye you'd think movin the bowl would be the smart thing to do

not very feasable tho sorry
he'll just have to sit on the coffee table and deal with a few waves once and a while i suppose

i wouldn't...

i wouldn't put him in with tthe cichlids..
he'll surely be killed.
even angel fish which is one of the least aggressive of the cichild
family bullies and damages goldfish.
i think it'll only be killed in the cichlid tank.
