Melafix label says to change 25% of water after 6 or 7 days. Should i change any water this week or wait like the instuctions say? I noticed the pop eye to days ago on my cichlid and started to medicate the tank yesterday. The fish with pop eye is alittle worse off today. I'm wondering if i should of used other antibiotic petsmart had. My friend sais melafix worked for his fish with pop eye. I guess i should continue with what i started using though. If this fish loses eye will a scab or skin grow over the crater of were the eye was? The fish is still young.
Can i do partial water changes while treating fish for pop eye?

Continue with melafix treatment, do not change the water until at least 5 days. Remember when using Melafix to take out any carbon media from the filter, otherwise the carbon strips the melafix from the water.
well if i take out my carbon filters then how will i filter the water. Right now i'm using power filter ? Thanks. Yesterday i came home during my lunch break after i bought melafix and unpluged the filter for 5 min while i put in the melafix. I stirred the water with big spoon to cirulate the medicine. Then i pluged the filter back in and went to work. Same for today also. Should i put more meds. in now and unplug the filter for the eveing? And should i do this every evening? When i open the hoods i smell the medicine in the water.
actually I do water changes while using melafix and redose the melafix when the fresh water is added.
pristine water is of major assistance in treating injury/disease.
you don't need to turn off the filter when adding, or stir.
remove carbon media from filter when treating meds. just take out the carbon sponge or other media, leave the rest.

ok you need to reconsider the carbon media - you should have some other stuff in their, basically just filter sponges and some floss.
Now, I don't advise that you change out your carbon media right now (at least not all of it) last thing you need is a cycle/mini cycle.
What I would do is cut out half the media, replace with sponges. Next week replace the other half.
In relation to the melafix, the makers advise removing activated carbon if possible but it should still have some effect.

well, the directions say remove carbon filters,if possible.
This power filter didnt come with anything but 2 carbon filters.
In my case dont see any other options. Maybe i can completly remove one of the two filters.
Would be less filtration but less medicine being absorbed by carbon filters. What do u think?

they make filter cartridge refills that you can choose to put the carbon in or not.
and no, the smaller amount of carbon would still remove the medication.. it would just do it a little more slowly.
