I've seen big bags of lava rock at Home Depot, was wondering if this stuff was safe to use in my filters, as it would be much cheaper than buying it anywhere else. Thanks

density

The lava rock that is at the hardware store is likely less porous than the sort used in fish tank. It may be heavier also.

yea it work fine, thats what i have in my skippy filters. its so cheap you can just get a lot of it if you have the space. but i heard the ones from lowes are toxic to animals.

Plastic potscrubbers are supposed to work as well or better, and are easier to clean. They also don't leach phosphates, which lava rock has been reported to do.

have used this stuff for years works really well from home depot or wal-mart and if you get a big bag the sizes and densities are limitless with a little digging and sorting.
