Can someone ID this American Cichlid for me?

HOLY ! How the heck do LFS (PetSmart in particular) get away with down-playing size and aggression that way? . . . . . .. . .

There are very few Big Box stores that know what they are selling, how to care for them, and the general things that a consumer should be told. Dealing with LFS is so much better! I deal with one in particular in our area for one reason - He refused to sell me any fish until I brought him a water sample! ( I was looking for exotic fish) I never did buy it as I had changed my mind when I found out all the particulars I never knew. Big Box is there for one reason - to sell! Our PetCo even sells diseased fish! What does that tell you?

Barbs are older fellas, so are Picts (ex had 2 yrs before giving to me in '04~ So I'm hoping they're done!), red-tail cat is 2ish y/o (also aquired from ex on the--tend to get "his" fish everytime he deploys) from what I've read this one should be pretty close to full-size, and Firemouth is probably 4-5 yrs...so I would think he's gone too... Just wondering. I wasn't planning on upgrading any time soon, but...
I hope that red tail cat is a typo as they can grow to over 4'.

UGHHH! This ig just getting worse and worse! Essentially, as it stands now, I have 16 fish in this tank, ELEVEN of which will essentially outgrow it unless they were one of two, MAYBE three total residents... not to mention that I transplanted (and added several) plants to this tank because the Africans kept nibbling...and the $25.00 x 3 bags of flourite (for the PLANTS)...GRRRRR

Does ANYONE know of a NON PetSmart store in the Central Georgia area? There is not a snowball's chance in [self-censored], those greedy swine shall aquire another PENCE from my POCKET! ....and I obviously need another setup rather soon...

Sorry to double-post; but, I was banging out the last while you were managing this one. The Red-Tail Shark (catfish--right?) is b/t 4-5". I've had him about 2 yrs, and I believe my ex MAY have had him about one year before that. (never can tell). IMO, he's small for his lenght. I had one prior that reached just about 7 inches (maybe a tad less). He was much fatter! He was one of my first fish ever, and I lost him last year--about 5 and a half years. He never appeared ill. Fine one day, lying at the bottom of tank next...and NONE of the others even touched him--thought that was ODD...but anyway...I'm assuming that this 'new' guy will get about the same size--no? Do they get even LARGER? Oh please say NO!

I'm afraid I've ended up with a tank full of MONSTERS! (size-speak)

Are you serious? I mean honestly, I can be a gullible sap--I know...and I imagine I make it fun...but REALLY? is my situation THAT bad?

I couldn't house these guys in, say, another 150g regular so they had the length to swim? (that's about what I was thinking as a solution...maybe keeping the barbs and cats as is, and moving the rest to a 150???) You seriously don't think that would be sufficient?

Er..with the tinfoil barbs it depends. I hear ideal tank size is 300 gal for them. They're the only ones I really know about.

They're not even bred in captivity from what I hear. Petsmart/co have no right to sell them.

A red tail shark will grow to 4-5" but a red tail catfish will grow to 4'

Sorry...this thread has suddenly become a bit to keep up with. I should have quoted the others in the last reply so as to clarify whom I'm responding to.

I thought this 'shark' WAS actually a catfish...didn't realise there was a difference in nomenclature. He's (allegedly) a Red-tailed SHARK! I'd attach a pic, but he's rather camera shy, and the best I have is a fuzzy streak of black with an orange-red smidge at one end.
