can u keep a male and female betta together??

I wouldn't do it in a ten gal tank.
I know it worked out for me in a thirty gal to keep a male and a group of females.

In my 30g, with 3 female bettas, he spawned with 1 (for the tasty eggs) and then started nipping (he already chased a lot). I think you can keep a male with a female in large tanks (150g min.) or even a male with a male in HUGE tanks (like 500g+, planted with hiding spots, lol not many small fish communities that big). But I still think I wouldn't do either no matter how big the tank.

I had a pair and they fought to the death too - but it was the female that was the victor. I then tried another beautiful red male and she killed him too... Turns out my female is actually a male without the big flarey fins - and a hard one at that! Wouldn't mind but I only got him by mistake as he was bagged along with my neons in the shop and the store owner thought it would be good for the male to have company... last time I relied on him!

I kept male bettas together that way, because one was a short finned male and I didn't know. Then one day the "female betta" who was my first and I was trying to spawn with the first male decided to spawn with one of the other females. The shop still denied they sold me a short fin male...Really frustrating though I did learn male bettas can live together.

how about a divider for the tank

how did you deduce that it was indeed a shortfinned male and not just a bad-tempered female? :)

Because "she" then spawned with a female :duh:

Some females can just be too old to mate, too, and therefor are nasty-tempered and more interested in shredding your fish than mating him. I've had a female like that before. I only knew she was a girl because she'd sometimes show vertical stripes when she was younger... but she'd never breed. Frustrating!! >.<

I can't imagine how angry I'd be if I was sold a plakat male as a female betta... but I guess it's easier to make that mistake now that females look so much like short-finned males....

Anywho, back to the subject!!

Male and female betta in a 10 gallon? Please don't even risk it.

Not unless you have a backup plan to set up a separate tank for her. If you want your male betta to have companions, add some rasboras or pygmy cories or a snail instead. He'll chase them a bit until he gets bored of it and then he'll probably leave them alone. Better than him spazzing and killing a female betta or her spazzing and shredding him, right?
