i like my blackbelt [V. maculicauda] alot. today i saw a beautiful V. regani - similar shape but very different colors.. can these peacefully coexist? are they close enuff to cross breed? not that i want fry, but want to know if spawning behavior would become a problem.

Even though they are in the same genus, they are in 2 different "groupings". It should work if your aquarium is around 75g or more.

Viejas for the most part can sometimes tolerate other species of cichlids of equal size and aggression. From my own experience and info shared with others in the hobby it is seen that they do not tolerate other fish in the Vieja species. Both of those fish are on the mild side of aggression as far as Vieja's go so it might work. me personally, i wouldnt try but thats not to say it wont work. trial and error my friend.. only way to know for sure.

Yeah, if you wanted to keep a Synspila, Bifasciatus, Melanuras, Zonatum, etc. with you Maculicauda, it probably not pan out. But a Regani, Heterospila, Argentae, etc. would usually do ok. I have quite a bit of experiance with all of these Vieja's and more, and in my opinion it should work out. I currently have a medium sized Heterospila and Zonatum in a 55g. Things are just peachy between the two of them, but when a similiar sized Synspila was introduced, the Zonatum got torn up.

I think its worth a try.

When I introduced a Vieja Synspilum in with my Maculicauda they got along real well. So well they were paired off within a week and I had free swimming hybrids in two weeks. The male Synspilum went postal and killed a pleco and had all of the fish in the corner until I removed him. The JD took care of the fry after that.;) Thats my experience, very limited but I hope it helps.
