I LOVE THIS FORUM!!

Hey, I am establishing a 5 gal. tank. I am well into my Nitrite spike and I am doing partial water changes daily. My question is: Am I changing too much of the water and hindering the cycling process? Here is my daily procedure

1. Change 1 gal of water
2. Prepare another gallon to change

Repeat 4 times.

The result Nitrite levels down to 0.25-0.5 ppm

Repeat the next day.

So What do you think?

P.S. This is a FISHY cycle

Well, not really. What you end up with would be about a 90% water change daily. The cycle will occur, it's just going to take a longer time. It will still happen.

In a cycled tank, you can't change too much water for most species. Some fish are sensitive to slight variations in water temp and pH, so you'd need to be careful and test the water. In a cycling tank, the cleaner the water is, the better off the fish will be in the long run.

Kind of like having a low grade fever for a month, versus hitting 106 for one day, I guess.
