Can you have too much filter?

This might be a dumb question, but is it possible to have too much filtering for a tank, mech or bio. I have a really large filter and a 20g tank. The reason being I was planning on having a larger tank and it was on clearance From most of the reading I've done it appears having surface movment and current is a good thing most of the time? I mean as long as my fish have some place to hide/rest and aren't getting vacuumed up by the thing it should be alright right? Oh yeah this setup isn't running yet. Its just going to be freshwater with no plants.

You can't really have too much filtration...just have to make sure that the currents generated in your tank are appropriate aren't too much. If the fish seem happy...I'd say you'll be fine.

Thats about what I figured but I ask to be safe.

It's an aquaclear 500, I figure if it's suckin the fish I can always put it on the lower flow mode.

It was quite a while ago, probably almost six months, been lagging totally on getting a tank setup. I just looked up my invoice I paid 33.99 bucks which was the best price I could find at that time I know I also either got 10% off or free shipping can't remember. Big als has it cheaper now 29.99, pretty sure I glanced it at petsmart in-store the other day for 64.99 but it seems to be 39.99 on thier website. So I didn't get ripped, well anymore than usual for aquarium stuff lol. It is sad though when the light/hood costs more than the tank.

C'mon - people will argue anything, especially fish tank related. Multiple filters are personal choice and certainly not detrimental, many of us find them quite helpful.

But current does need to be appropriate to the livestock.

I dont disagree with having more than one filter, I was just saying how you still need to do the same maintenance and amount of water changes no matter how many filters you have, something alot of the newer people here might not know.

Thanks for all the info.
Got the tank all setup and the fish in it.

I have one cichlid in there and she absolutely loves the current from the filter. She goes by the filter intake and swims in the current.
