I was told that burning scented candles in the same room an aquarium is in is harmful to the fish. Is this true? I love candles but love my new fishies more!

Wow if that were true I'd have a lot of dead fish! My tanks have lids on them though if that makes a difference.

I have never had a problem burning candles in my room with my fish tanks. However they all hav covers, so don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I've burned plenty of scented candles, and also my Yankee Candle scented oil burner, plenty of times in my living room with no issues. My 45 gallon community and 55 gallon discus tank are in the living room, and the kitchen/living room wall has sort of a "window" with a ledge which is where the scented oil burner is. My open-top SW pico reef is in the kitchen about 4 feet from the oil burner. That tank is so small that if it were really an issue, that would be the first to go. I wouldn't worry about it.

Who told you this? Idgets.

Do not be so quick to judge. Some scented candles do release chemicals into the air that can be detrimental to a number of species, including some fish....and scented candles have actually killed a number of parrots.

One important note on the use of pesticide. "No Pest" strips, which employ dichlovos as an active ingredient, can be deadly when used anywhere near a fish tank, as airborne dichlorvos binds to water. I have personal experience with this.

I have seen one or two issues where incense or scented oils near air pumps did cause fishtank deaths.

sounds completely plausible...gaseous exchange taking place, therefore whatever is in the atmosphere is going to find its way into the water column if sufficiently close to the tank...and who's to know what chemicals are being used in those candles etc. and if they're harmful to fish...would you put one of those candles or other scent releasing things into your tank ?
