Ok, so my dad has set his mind on an eheim 2075 canister for his 75g planted tank.
What media do you planted tank folks use?
and what exactly does each different meida do.
He asked me the otehr day about what each kind does and I didn't have a good answer. He said he's even called the manufacturers and they kind of skate around the question.
Also, how long before you have to change out each kind of media?
This system has trays so he can fairly easily remove jsut one type of media at a time if needed.
Thanks in advance

Bottom: potscrubbers (a little bio filtration, coarse mechanical, keeps some of the snails out)

middle: Fluval & Eheim rings (all Eheim at first, after a few cleanings, you will find room for more)

coarse sponge - mechanical, keeps snails away from impeller

top: Efi... the cocoa-puffs looking stuff (lots of bio filtration, little more mechanical), then floss.

That's how I stack my Classic series Eheim (which I recommend over any of the newer ones - 2217 would be perfect for a 75g tank).

One more thing - see http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150192 1st page for exp. on why you should drill a hole in the U-tube (on the inside tank portion, a bit below however low you let your tank water get).

The hard media need never be replaced, just well rinsed a few times per year. The soft stuff - - -you will know when it's time.

just no carbon filtration in a planted tank if you plan to fertilize, the carbon will absorb everything including ferts or medication.
That fiber filter media, bio balls, sponges and purigen by seachem is what I use in both my HOB and canister.

I use coarse pads/mechanical first, then Ehfisubstrat Pro (cocoa puffs) with a pad on top, then Ehfisubstrat Pro with Poly-Fil for polishing.

Note, my canister is not an Eheim. it flows from bottom to top.

ok, so thats pretty basic stuff, but what does each one do? I mean, how do they work and what do they pull out or put into the water?

the 2073 and the 2075 came highly reccomended over the classic due to the easy detach and the trays that hold the media

The mechanical media removes larger debris, Biomedia like the Substrat provide a breeding ground for the beneficial bacteria and the polishing pads get the smaller particles that were missed the first time around :)

ok, totally noob question, what's the difference between mechanical media and polishing pads? what am I looking at at the fish store that does this? which one would filter floss fall under?

well technically, polishing pads are mechanical. the 'mechanical' ones i was referring to are just more coarse. fine pads are for polishing. if you have a good LFS, they should be able to know what your talking about.
