Is a C-360 overkill for a 55g?? I'm guessing my plains for it are to do a planted schooling type.

Nope, Not at all. I probably would run two of the C-220 though and alternate cleaning them vice just the single C-360.

Would it be ok to run 2 C-220's at each end as intakes & returns in the center?

It would depend on the fish, for me. Suctions in the center, same for the returns with the returns pointing at opposite end works for many. I have tanks where all are on one end panel, but they have messy fish.

Your decore will come into play. Depending on the fish, you may need a spray bar on the discharge to help break up the flow.

Ah yes, the fish. My wife & I were discussing this earlier. We decided on a 6+ group of Cory's, 8+ Lemon Tetras and a pair of Blood Red Hi Fin Swordtail's for now.
