i have a penguin 350 biowheel filter right now, and im thinking of upgrading to the eheim 2215 for my 46 bowfrnt, medium planting. is the eheim that much better. any comments and or suggestion please.

THANK YOU

Canister...all the way.

Eheim's are now being made in China, same as any other filter. I have one, but really don't see where it's so much better than other canisters to justify the price.

i run a penquin 350 and a magnum 350 canister on my 55

I don't use my biowheel anymore. it stopped spinning and if it ever had to be stopped, it was difficult to get it started again. now i run canister and another filter with a sponge for bio bacteria. both filters are old but work great.

I don't understand why people have such problems with bio wheel setups...I currently run 7 bio wheel filters, three of them penguin and four Emperors...have never had problems with wheels stopping, some are more than five years old. Anyway If I had to choose between the two I would go with the canister.

Bio-wheels are OK, I only like them because I can grow Ivy out of the open void behind the filter and have been using them in concert with my Magnum 350 canister filters, best performing 100 gal canister filter for the price $89 and has the largest filter surface area 6x12. But no way my HOBs performance comes close to my canister filter. I do think the bio wheels help oxygenate the water and provide some extra bacteria colonies, but their strongest point for me is using the HOBs that have the void behind the filter cartridge (Penguin 350) for growing house plants hydroponically which make them vastly superior for removing nitrates, hence HOB nitrate filter. Without my nitrate HOB filters my nitrates climb much too fast and too high, but with them I am no able to maintain 5-10 PPM indefinitely.

If you're ever going to add CO2 or go to the dark side (marine) - get the canister. If all you want are FW fish and slow growing plants, go biowheels.

Eheims still rule among cansiters (though Rena, Via Aqua and some others are decent values too).
