I'm looking at getting a canister filter for my planted freshwater 20gal. tall. I was thinking about the Eheim Ecco Pro, but wasn't sure which model (2232 or 2234?). I've read there is no such thing as "over-filtering" but I also don't want too much flow. Any suggestions?

My Whisper (model 1) power filter just doesn't seem to be cutting it these days.

i ran a rena xp2 on my 20 gallon and was quite happy with the setup. used the spray bar to cut down flow a bit (as opposed to using the 'jet' output piece).

IMO the rena canisters are the best.

Do you guys run any other sort of filtration along with your canisters? How do you prevent ammonia/nitrite spikes when cleaning those (if they are the only filter you're using)?

if your filter media is rinsed in a bucket of old tank water, then your bacteria will be safe and you shouldn't see any ammonia/nitrite spikes. it's when you rinse your media in tapwater that the bacteria get killed off by the chlorine and you get the spikes.

i run one filter on tanks up to 20 gallons. any tank larger than that gets two filters. my current 20 gallon long has one aquaclear hob on it rated for 50 gallons. i always over filter.

I have a 20L that I have a pair of 2232's on. I put two on it because they were on close out at Petsmart for $50. A single would not be enough flow. I had a 2236 on a planted 29 and loved how it worked. I would drop a pair of 2232's on it if your petsmart has them on closeout for a cost of about $100 or a single 2236 or 2217

Unfortunately for me Petsmart doesn't have the 2232 on their website right now and the local Petsmart I go to doesn't even stock Eheim products. Cheapest I've found is ~$100 including shipping.
