Heyya folks. I've had some discussion with a grad student I work with in the lab for awhile now and maybe you guys can put it to rest. So the goldfish is Carassius auratus. The koi is Cyprinus carpio. Now, I've seen Asian carp listed as both Cyprinus carpio and Carassius carassius, both in many different sources. So is the koi just a carp, or are they seperate? Thank you.

The koi is a derivation of Cyprinus carpio, which is another type of Asian carp, so, yep, koi are just carp.

By the by, the goldfish and koi can apparently hybridize and create fertile offspring with such hybridization.
