Carbon in a Sponge Filter?

Put it in small mesh bag (mabe panty hose) and put it in the sponge filter. I figuire it would get enough current in there. I am setting up a grow out tank for platy fry. I just want as much extra filtration without endangering the fry. Is this possible or even worth it? Would there be enough water going through to be effective.
