I just recently read Graphicdesigne_r thread about the best underwater character, and I started to realize about all the thing Cartoon Network has done to our old time classic cartoons:

- Super Friends, turned into "Justice League".
- A new version of He-Man, renamed as only "Masters of The Universe".
- Scooby Doo turned into "What's new Scooby Doo?"

And many other shows have been modernized, just like "Batman, the animated series" and a similar Superman series by WBTV.

Old time super heroes had only one motivation: they were there, the villian came in, the fight happened and a good laugh to end the chapter of the day. In today's cartoon, most people are depicted with a life of their own. They have problems, the get sick. The only character I can remember having real-life issues was SpiderMan and his problems with Mary Jane (not drug takling here).

Today's cartoons are really intrincate. They have thick plots. There is deception, racial violence, incorrect sexual/partner behaviour. Thay even get corssed with other series, giving them a more intrincate and interesting plot, so you are forced to watch every episode of 2-3 similar programs to let you understand what's going on.

I've never defended old time cartton as better than todays. If you use clear judgement and watch a normal 1980's Tom and Jerry episode, the cat gets dismembered, smashed, violently punished, over humilliated, burnt, etc...

Just a comment.

I never realised what exactly Yosemite Sam meant when he called buggs a blankity blankin(I dont think I even want to say it) rabbit untill I grew up. lol

Cartoons will awlays get more intricate and plot related. I noticed it when new ones came out when I was a kid, and I notice it now just as much.

Actually, there are two Cartoon Network channels. One is called "Bomerang" and it shows ALL the old old cartoons: Jetsons, Flinstones, Wacky Races, Tom & Jerry, Yogi Bear, Magilla Gorilla, Dastardly and Muttly, Speed Buggy (Loved that!), Snagglepuss, and on and on.

We watch that every day :)

My children are not allowed to watch any cartoons until I watch them first. Some are highly inappropriate.

Great.
And I thought the "news media" blamed it all on violent video games...

i just don't like cartoons. i never got into the old ones by WB and the superhero stuff, and whatever.

only cartoons i like are Japanese Anime, they are very involved, with deep plots and most are not meant for children at all.

Not for kids! That's the word. I'm a cartoon lover. I like anime, but not as much as some of my friends. Actually, the only anime series I've seen whole is Dragon Ball Z and GT.

Once, my girlfriend asked me how can the air these violent kid shows, and I made her see those cartoon are not meant for kids. BTW, I really love the Cartoon Network weekend programming called Adult Swim.

I have found an amazing new cartoon on adult swin that is worth getting all the DVDs, it's called Samurai Champloo and it's hilarious...

As for other adult swim underwater adventures, don't leave out Sealab 2021 which was absolute genius. "I'm declaring martian law!"

And Marvel has always had many characters with insane social issues, ie. Iron Man's massive alcohol problems in the 70's, Batman getting hooked on steroids for a bit in the 90's, in the 1950's fight between spider-man and green goblin (death of Gwen Stacey) Peter Parker couldn't tell Harry that anything was wrong because Harry was too busy tripping on LSD to know where he was.
