they are scavengers and will eat leftovers. However, there intire diet can not be based on scrapes from other fish feedings. every 3-4 days through in a few shrimp pellets, happily accepted by both. If you feed it to often, they will get lazy, and not clean the bottom

probably the best prepared food for most bottom feeders is sinking carnivore pellets by hikari. very nutritious, but kind of expensive (although more than worth it in my opinion). it doesnt have to be fed everyday, but feeding it 3-4 times a week has proven to be beneficial to the bottom feeders i have and have had or observed at work (a pet shop).
