I've just bought a Coral Beauty Angelfish - he seems to be acclimating pretty well to the tank, but he bullies the Royal Gramma I have around all the time now :( The gramma was somewhat shy, but he came out of his cave somewhat regularly - now whenever he comes out, the CBA chases him back in. Other than the fact that I don't get to see the royal gramma much anymore, I'm worried that this will be detremental to the RG's health since he's being chased around/hiding all the time.

Has anyone else had a similar situation, or any advice as to how to stop the CB Angelfish from being so bullying? I have a 40 gallon with two false percs, a royal gramma, and a coral beauty angelfish. To a lesser extent, the CBA seems to push around my clownfish as well =\

Thanks for any help!

How big is the angel compared to the other fish? How long have the other fish been in your tank? Have they had a chance to settle in and establish themselves and their territory? I have had similar situations...usually the only thing that happens is either the fish fight back and show some muscle or you have to take the bully out...usually the latter.

I recently tried introducing a tiny Eibli Angelfish to a tank with a full size Blue Assessor in it. The assessor had been in the tank for a long time but is a very shy fish. The eibli started harassing the assessor straight away. I decided to give them one day and night to sort themselves out but when I woke up in the morning the assessor had shredded fins.

I had to move the angel to another tank, it was just too aggressive and the assessor was too shy. The angel however is fine in the other tank with a blenny and a goby.

If the angel is causing physical damage to gramma you will probably have to take it out fairly quickly. If it isn't actually damaging the fish, just stopping it from coming out and eating, then you can give it a few days to see if things change. When I had an agro sixline wrasse he slowly calmed down after a few days but all the other aggressive fish I've owned I've had to remove.

You could try putting a small mirror up against the glass, to distract the angel, but other than that you may need to remove him.

Different fish have different personalities. I had a CB Angel that was peaceful as a mouse. You just never know until you stick the fish in a tank together.
